Seems that I’ve been blessed with many examples of unusual weather in Snoqualmie since moving to Snoqualmie Ridge in August, from Austin, Texas. I’ve been told over and over again… “Oh, this isn’t normal.” LOL… not that I’m complaining. Well, it’s good for me that I LOVE the snow! The Seattle area has experienced an exceptionally unusual series of snow events the past few days, the worst (or best) of which will happen tomorrow, January 18, 2012. The short video below was taken the morning of January 17th. Notice, the children seem to be handling matters just fine.

While Seattle may receive upwards of 8″-10″ (although there’s significant disagreement about that), the foothills around Snoqualmie Ridge may receive a 10″-15″ of additional snow, before this is all over. This is ON TOP of the foot we’ve already received in the past 24 hours. Fortunately, the city of Snoqualmie plows many of the streets in, and near Snoqualmie Ridge. But anyone unlucky enough to park their cars along the sides of the street will be quite busy digging their car out.

Anyway… not to worry. If you’re reading this well after this event, rest assured, this type of snowfall isn’t “normal” – supposedly.

Particularly for those of us who live in the Snoqualmie Valley, Snoqualmie Ridge, and other locations along or within the foothills of the Cascades, it’s important to consider car maintenance and preparation for winter driving.

Windshield Wipers and Fluid

Although it’s smart to consider year round, be sure to winterize your windshield wipers and washer fluid. If you haven’t already done so, check your blades for wear and replace them if they’re looking the least bit haggard. Keep the washer tank full of anti-freeze cleaner, which is a big help when snow and ice are clinging to the windshield. It’s always smart to have a spare gallon in the trunk to ensure you don’t run out. I’m sure you’ll agree that there’s nothing like trying to drive the I-90 corridor with a windshield splattered in dirty road spray, slush and mud and no washer fluid in the tank.

All Season & Snow Tires

Good tires are absolutely essential. You don’t want to be “that car & driver” who can’t make it up the hill (or slides down the hill, and into another car) because your tires no longer have sufficient tread. All-season tires are a must in our part of the country. They have more tread than a street tire but less than an official snow tire, so you can leave them on the car all year long. They work well in both snow and mud. Carry snow tire chains and you’ll be prepared for even the heaviest snow conditions.

Studded Tires

Many residents in the Snoqualmie Valley and upper areas of the Cascades have their tires changed out seasonally with studded tires, which are only legal in Washington State November 1st, through March 31st. (The studs wear through the pavement, and Washington State would like to see the use of studded tires phased out.) That “clickity-clackety” you sometimes hear coming from cars driving around Snoqualmie, North Bend, or even Issaquah, are car owners who’ve likely had an unfortunate or scary winter driving experience in the past. Or, they may have become a prisoner in their Snoqualmie Ridge home for three days while waiting for the roads to clear of snow and ice – though thankfully, such severe winter weather doesn’t happen often. (In fact, as of this writing, Snoqualmie Ridge has barely received any snow in the 2011-2012 winter season – granted, that’s also unusual.)

Freezing Fog & Hoar Frost

What is quite common however, is freezing-fog, or “hoar frost.” It is common at night in the Snoqualmie Valley for daytime clouds to give way to crystal clear skies. The enhanced radiational cooling creates dew which instantly freezes on all surfaces, including the roads. With the sun being so low in the sky, even on a clear morning, the commute can be made extremely hazardous due to the hoar frost, or freezing fog. This is another reason why studded tires are common in the Snoqualmie Valley in the winter; however, most car owners don’t opt for this level of preparation, due to both the expense, and because studded tires actually make the roads less safe over time.

In Case you Get Stuck

Regardless of winter driving preparedness, even the best drivers with ideal equipment may eventually find themselves off the road. If you get stuck in the snow or off the side of the road, rock the car forward and backward. You can do this by pushing or driving. Try to avoid spinning the wheels as this will only dig you in deeper into the snow and/or mud. Shovel some sand or biodegradable kitty litter around the tires. Always keep your steering wheel straight as you pull out.

In case you cannot extricate the car yourself, call for help immediately. If you need to run the engine to keep warm, only do so for a few minutes at a time, crack a window and make sure your tailpipe is clear of snow. Always keep an emergency kit in each vehicle. It should include jumper cables, flares, flashlight, tow rope, kitty litter or sand, shovel, snacks, water and a blanket. Include a hat, gloves and heavy socks if you don’t usually wear these things out in the winter.

The Snoqualmie Valley of Washington State is one of the most beautiful place to live in the country! So, if you’re looking to move to the Valley or Snoqualmie Ridge, don’t be frightened away by these tips. Such harsh winter conditions are the exception – but when those exceptions happen, you’ll be glad you prepared for winter driving well in advance.

Our pets are more than just feline and canine companions, they’re part of our families. While it’s natural to want to include them in our holiday celebrations, we need to remember that some of our favorite Christmas decor, and other holiday related items, can actually be a danger to them.

Your Issaquah Veterinarians ask that you consider the following holiday pet safety tips.

Keep Pets Away from Toxic Plants

Nibbling on popular, but poisonous holiday plants can cause stomach upset and diarrhea in both dogs and cats. Because these plants are toxic, ingesting too much may even be fatal. Try to keep all potentially poisonous plants out of reach from your pets. Regardless, if you suspect your pet has consumed even a small amount of any of these poisonous holiday plants (or any other toxic plants during any season), contact your local Issaquah veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 888-4ANI-HELP (888-426-4435) immediately.

Holly

Mistletoe

Poinsettias

Christmas Cacti

Evergreen needles

Amaryllis

Jerusalem Cherry

Pyracantha

Rosary Pea

Other Holiday Hazards for Pets

Nothing says Christmas like a pile of beautifully wrapped packages and a well decorated tree. Unfortunately, some wrapping and decorating items present a danger to our pets, and cats especially love to play with all the decor. Keep the following at a safe distance from your pets, and contact your veterinarian immediately if you suspect ingestion.

Ribbon, yarn or string – These items can cause intestinal obstruction or bunching of the intestine, both potentially fatal

Tinsel – This holiday favorite is a choking hazard and can also cause intestinal obstruction if swallowed.

Low-hanging ornaments – Many are breakable or have sharp edges. They can tear the esophagus or intestine if ingested.

Christmas light cords – These are both strangulation and electrocution hazards.

Make sure your Christmas tree is stable. Many cats love to climb the tree and can become injured if it falls over. And moreover, a fallen natural tree becomes a much greater fire hazard if the lights are on. Dogs roughhousing around an unstable tree may knock it over.

If you have a fresh cut Christmas tree, don’t allow your pets to drink the tree water. Sap, insecticides and fertilizers can seep into the water and bacteria will form over time. Cover the basin with a tree skirt to keep curious cats and dogs away.

Call Your Issaquah Veterinarian In Case of Emergency

Keep the poison control center and your Issaquah veterinarian’s number handy and don’t hesitate to call either if you think your pet may be in danger. If you’re new to the area and have not yet selected a veterinarian, consider one of the following animal veterinarians in the Issaquah area:

Issaquah Veterinary Hospital
795 1st Avenue NW, Issaquah, WA 98027
(425) 392-6211

Cougar Mountain Veterinary Hospital & Wellness Center
880 Front St. S, Issaquah, WA 98027
(425) 369-9291

Klahanie Center Veterinary Hospital
4582 Klahanie Drive SE, Issaquah, WA 98029
(425) 392-3110

For years, selling homes during the holidays have received an undeserved bad rap. We’re all certainly busy with a wealth of festive activities. But between dashing through the snow and fa la la la laing, serious sellers may discover that the holiday season is not just a good time for marketing real estate, but a fantastic one!

As a home seller, you may be tempted to take your home off the market during the holidays. However, most real estate professionals would advise against it. Twinkle lights and evergreen wreaths add to the curb appeal of your property’s exterior. The Christmas tree and ornaments, along with delicious holiday baking aromas serve as interior staging.

The holidays also bring out the serious home buyers. Everyone who was just looking “for fun,” or toying with the idea of a move, tables the activity until after the New Year in order to focus on their holiday to-do lists. The serious buyers, those who are truly ready and able to buy, don’t back-burner their search. In fact, they may even ramp up their efforts in order to complete a purchase before the New Year.

If you’re concerned about the impact open houses and showings may have on your own holiday preparations, discuss those concerns with your Realtor. You may be able to set blackout dates or steer showings to days and times that are more convenient. But remember, the more flexible you are, the easier you make it for a serious buyer to check out your home. And it only takes one.

It’s easy to find real Christmas trees in Issaquah or Snoqualmie, and pretty much anywhere in the Pacific Northwest, whether you want to cut your own tree, or buy a pre-cut variety. In fact, many families have made acquiring their holiday tree a highly anticipated holiday tradition. If you’ve been an artificial tree household until now, choose a real Christmas tree this year. And before you head out to one of the many Christmas tree farms in the Seattle area, consider these tips.

According to the National Christmas Tree Association, 25 to 30 million real Christmas trees are sold in the U.S. each year. There are currently 350 million real Christmas trees growing on farms in the U.S. alone. For every real Christmas tree harvested this year, one to three seedlings will be planted in the spring.

While artificial christmas trees may offer a certain measure of convenience, they are not an ecologically sound choice. Real Christmas trees are a renewable, recyclable resource, while artificial trees contain non-biodegradable plastics and other materials. And you just can’t beat a real Christmas tree when it comes to that holiday evergreen scent.

Measure twice, cut once. To avoid having to cut off the top off a too big tree (or trim down the branches), measure the area available before you leave the house. You’ll need to note the ceiling height of the room in which you plan to display your tree as well as the width of the available area.

Know your varieties. In this area of the country, fresh Fir trees, including Douglas, Noble, Grand and Fraser, are plentiful. Each offers different decorating options, so decide on the variety you want before you arrive at the tree farm.

The Douglas Fir is the most popular Christmas tree variety in the nation. Dense and full with dark green needles, it looks fantastic ornamented with twinkling, white lights alone. It has a sweet evergreen scent.

The branches of the Noble Fir provide plenty of space for Christmas tree ornaments. They are also quite strong, making them a great choice if you tend to over decorate. Noble Firs are lightly scented.

Grand Firs offer thick foliage and a strong fragrance. They have shiny, dark green needles. Symmetrical and pyramidal like the Douglas variety, the Grand Fir offers a more citrusy evergreen aroma.

The Fraser Fir is known for its excellent needle retention and pleasant scent. It has short, dark green needles and tiered branches. It is quite strong and durable; able to support a multitude of holiday decorations.

Here are a couple local Christmas tree farms to consider when planning your Christmas tree excursion:

Trinity Tree Farm - Cut your own or choose from pre-cut Christmas trees. Leave time to check out the gift shop and enjoy complimentary cocoa and cider by the bonfire as well.

14237 228th Ave SE
Issaquah, WA 98027
425.391.TREE
www.trinitytreefarm.com

Enchanted Winds Tree Farm - Choose and cut your own tree. Assistance with tree shaking and loading provided. Be sure to check out the barn gift shop before you leave. Enjoy complimentary hot cider, cookies, and hayrides as well.

18021 Issaquah-Hobart Rd
Issaquah, WA 98027
425.432.4573

And remember about Christmas lights and safety! Once you have your real tree at home, be sure to keep it watered. Of course, a fresh tree is not going to dry out very fast. However, home heating and holiday lights can cause a tree to become a fire hazard over a long period of time. Happy holidays & Merry Christmas!

It’s that time of year again in Issaquah & Snoqualmie – time to get out the ladder and untangle all those strands of outdoor holiday lights to tack on to your home, while trying not to slip off your wet ladder or roof while doing so! Better yet, try to pick a day when our Pacific Northwest weather isn’t wreaking havoc… which is notoriously difficult to predict.

Ideally, if you’re stringing Christmas lights on the home itself and beyond the landscaping, it may best to call up a local Issaquah or Snoqualmie holiday lighting company this season. But… if you’re set on handling this holiday project on your own, please consider these outdoor holiday lighting tips.

Decide Where You Want Your Lights

Especially if you live in Snoqualmie, you’ll save time and eliminate multiple trips to the store if you determine approximately how many lights you’ll need before you begin. Consider stringing lights along your roof-line and eaves, around pillars, posts, windows and door-frames. Holiday lights can also add a festive touch to bushes, trees, window boxes and planters. You can even use them to highlight focal points in your yard and garden. Be sure to measure everything you intend to decorate with lights, including the distance from the object to your outdoor power source.

Now, It’s Time to Buy Your Lights

All light strands you use should be UL-listed and rated for outdoor use – this is paramount in the Issaquah and Snoqualmie areas, and the entire Pacific Northwest, due to all the rain. You’ll have a choice between incandescent lights and LED lights. Incandescent lights are the traditional Christmas lights you remember from childhood. Available in white and a variety of other colors, they are less expensive than LED lights. LED lights are brighter, and remain cool to the touch even after hours of use. While more costly, they are 90 percent more energy efficient than incandescent lights.

Don’t forget everything else you’ll need. You may need items such as outdoor extension cords, a timer, a ladder, hardware such as specialty hooks and clamps, basic tools such as a screwdriver and hammer, and work gloves.

Hanging the Lights

It’s finally time for the fun part! But remember…safety first. If possible, hang your lights during the day. Avoid hanging them while it’s raining or snowing! Untangle all cords before you climb any ladders. Plug in each strand to test it. Replace any broken or burned out bulbs. A partner is always helpful. The job will go quicker, and be much safer, if you have someone to hold the ladder, fetch tools and hardware, and keep the cords untangled.

Start at the top of your house and work your way down. Never connect more than three strands end to end. Use strong clips to attach the lights to your home whenever possible – and be sure to consider the wind and rain.. Using nails or staples can damage the cords, and very possibly your home over time.

Call the Holiday Lighting Professionals

If you don’t want to do it yourself, you can still have a gorgeous holiday light display – just hire a local professional installer. A couple companies in the Issaquah and Eastside Seattle area with great customer ratings include:

Brothers Holiday Lighting - Providing classic Christmas lighting solutions to more than 400 residential and commercial clients since 2000. You can reach them at 425.829.4533 or visit the website at www.brothersholidaylighting.com.
